Julia woke with a start. She hadnât intended to sleep â just lay down for five minutes to catch her breath.
When she arrived home she realized sheâd lied to herself as well as Seth. Yes sheâd dreamed. Many times. And though she only remembered snatches of those dreams, she knew thereâd been more than a shred of truth in what heâd said. How much truth though? Did she want to find out? Was she afraid to?
âWho are you really?â she said aloud, wishing that the picture could speak and tell her what to do.
Studying the photograph on her wall, she wondered what had happened to her resolve. Didnât she promise herself that sheâd take the picture down? Destroy it?
She marched across the room, determined to follow through, but as she reached up, a small voice seemed to whisper in the back of her mind, and a flash of something like a vision filled her mind. For one long moment she stared at a flesh and blood man, wearing a strange linen kilt and a blue and gold striped headdress. His face, the face in the photograph and Sethâs face, appeared to converge into one being. Motionless, she felt as if she teetered on the precipice of knowing something very important. The man, so much taller and stronger than her, lifted a hand as if beckoning. And though she wanted to step closer, her feet seemed leaden, too heavy to move.
âWhat do you want?â she begged silently, her lips as immobile as her feet.
The pharaoh smiled, then murmured directly into her thoughts, âDonât trust him. Wait for me. I vow to save you.â
Who shouldnât I trust? Seth? Someone else?
Slowly, the image began to fadeâ¦and with a sudden jerk, Julia sprang upright.
Tears filled her eyes when she acknowledged it was a dream.
âIâm going insane,â she cried aloud, as she held her forehead and squeezed her eyes tightly shut.
The phone jangled and Bird began to squawk in response. For one quivering moment she thought she might collapse into a blubbering heap. But she wouldnât allow it. She was stronger than that and had been for a long time.
Ever since sheâd escaped her stalker, sheâd been building strength and confidence. It had taken a time and lots of encouragement from Irene but now she was able to go days, sometimes weeks, without seeing that flash of him outside her window, without feeling that hollow fear that had pursued her once she realized heâd been watching her.
Breathing very deeply, she marshaled her thoughts, opened her eyes and picked up the phone.
âHave you spoken to your accountant?â The question sounded almost harsh and it took a second for Julia to recognize Gerryâs voice.
âGerry? Why are youâre calling so soon â I asked you to give me a couple of days.â
A muffled expletive shot down the phone line. Julia frowned.
âActually,â he continued, his voice sweetly coaxing, âI had hoped youâd gotten the ball rolling. Iâve spoken to my business partner and moved some funds ready to make the deal.
